"We had a lovely visit at this you could call it a strip mall, however, it does look a bit dire from the outside, there are two souvenir/gift stores, to visit one on the bottom lefthand corner of the building, a little exxy for our tastes, however the upstairs shops was amazing. Carolyn Reed Art & Framing Oh. My. Goodness/God (depending on your stripe). What a fabulous little shop. We tempered our expectations for the Mall of Dutch Harbor and only found out about this shop because the owner of the gift store downstairs mentioned there was another shop upstairs. We went in through the unassuming door with the list of tenants - at the top of the stairs turn left and you will be in this gem of a store - we really wish we had our own ship and that it was going back to our home in Australia - we could have bought more. Lots of lovely vintage jewellery, some stunning handmade jewellery by both Carolyn and other artists. Amazing block cut prints, just generally a great little shop and NOT trying to rip off visitors to Dutch harbour - reasonable prices on everything - really stunning little shop and in the most unexpected of places. Suffice it to say, if Carolyn had a pop-up shop on the wharf - you’d really want to be first off the ship or otherwise you would miss out. I strongly suggest you look for the sea otter jewellery (the ring/pendant/bangle in sterling where the cutest little guy is holding a pearl) - made by an artist in Hawaii. What did I buy? A postcard of Dutch, a gorgeous little sterling pill box and a stunning ring with a topaz and amethyst. I never like to say never - but if I’m ever in Dutch Harbour again, this will be my very first stop for a unique and charming souvenir of this little town at the edge of the world."
With Dutch troops alongside British and French troops, this would have put more toll on the Germans. Simple: the Netherlands was neutral, and didn't really have a reason to join the war. For Britain to do that to them would be similar to what Germany did with Belgium.
曾用名包括The Dutch Republic、The United State of Belgium、The Kingdom ofHollande。 那为什么很多人认为Holland也可以代表荷兰呢? 事情是这样子滴,放大荷兰地图,荷兰被分为 12个省份。 其中两个,就是NorthHolland和SouthHolland。 (所以Holland其实是省份名字里的一部分)
The Dutch were already internationally known as scrooges, and English rivalry with The Netherlands especially during the period of the Anglo-Dutch Wars gave rise to several phrases including Dutch that promote certain negative stereotypes. Examples include Dutch courage, Dutch uncle and Dutch wife.
The Dutch Empire, similarly, did not fully emerge until the seventeenth century, following the signing of the Twelve Years' Truce with the Catholic King. It is indeed true that, after Portugal's independence—de facto in 1640 and de jure in 1668—the Portuguese ceded Bombay and Tangier to the English in 1662.
So perhaps the Commonwealth regime, which fought the First Anglo-Dutch War, unlike the Restoration Royalist regime that fought the Second and Third, was more inclined to suck military manpower and talent *out* of the Colonies (at least the New England ones) than to invest fresh manpower *in* to the North American theater.
That's a fascinating "what if"! From what I know, the Dutch really embraced their own identity during the 17th century with the Dutch Revolt and their fight for independence from Spain. By the 18th and 19th centuries, they were pretty solid in their Dutch identity, even though they shared a lot of historical and cultural ties with the Germans.
The Dutch basically received the option either to accept Napoleon's brother Louis as King or face annexation, after heavy deliberation they picked the former. However Louis became so popular that the idea of Kingship became quite acceptable in the Netherlands. Louis quickly learned the language and followed a pro-Dutch policy.
