I would definately be careful as many people rent boats and are unaware of boat rules or how to follow them. we've had people pass us on the wrong side or have no manners and passed us at full speed causing a wake big enough to have us go airborn and get hurt. Not badly, but it was a rude awakening for sure. Have fun but be safe. You could try and get some info from a local marina.

The water taxi is a company, like a land taxi, that operates on the intercostal with various pickup points. They also offer information on the various waterway homes that are some of the most expensive homes in America. Go after 5:00 pm and its $15 per person. I suggest taking in downtown Lauderdale for dinner and see the homes during the day and lit up at night. The taxi has discount arrangements with various restaurants on Los Olas.
