Pretty much as described in the above posting. We caught a ride on one of the many Motochiva's from center of Guatpe. It took about 10 minutes to reach El Penol. The driver dropped us off at the entrance where you will find the ticket office and a number of restaurants and tourist shops. From the base it looks quite challenging. I'm a reasonably healthy, non-smoking, 59 year old male, and the climb up took less than 20 minutes. It's not as hard as it looks from the bottom. If you are coming by bus from Medellin, the driver can drop you off at the road entrance to El Penol, but it's a long walk uphill from there. You might be able to catch a ride or rent a horse, but my best advice is to continue with the bus to Guatape, enjoy a cool drink in this charming town and then grab a quick and cheap motochiva to take you directly to the entrance. Save your energy for the stair climb. You can purchase drinks and snacks from vendors at the top while recovering and taking in the magnificent views. If you have time, spend a night in Guatape and enjoy a boat ride on the lake. See the homes of famous Colombian Footballers and ruins of a home owned by Pablo Escobar!
