We recently visited. Unlike other areas in San Francisco, the Embarcadero is flat so it's easy for walking. There are lots of stores, restaurants and attractions, particularly at Pier 39 and at the F… Full review by funmaru2

The SF waterfront and pier area are bordered by the Embarcadero. From the Ferry Building to the several warehouses and piers that have been transformed into multipurpose structures. Full review by trenoz M
We two New Zealanders are arriving at San Fran international airport at 1pm May 4th and have now to depart Friday 1pm May 5th. Before rescheduling of plane I booked into Mystic Hotel, Stockton St.Union Sqiuare. How can we make the most of our overnighter in SF? - (have not been before)

You will love the city but get on your walking shoes and spend the whole afternoon on foot. Do not bother with cable car rides ($7.50 apiece I believe), do not walk to Fisherman's Wharf from Embarcadero (too long and not that interesting). On foot, head uphill to Nob Hill and walk towards Russian Hill along any of the main streets until you get to the winding street (Lombard). Then head to Coit Tower Telegraph Hill and walk up to the actual tower, visit the frescoes at the bottom of the Tower but do not pay for the elevator, then go outside for spectacular views of the Bay (all free) and then work your way down to the Italian section. Restaurants are very touristy in this area but I still suggest having the fish stew (cioppino) at Sotto Mare Oysteria (expect an hour wait or more). In the evening, walk through Chinatown. Next morning, grab a taxi to B.Patisserie for breakfast. On your way back to your hotel, take a few minutes to visit the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill.

There is a YMCA in the Embarcadero area that should have lane swimming at certain times each day. Also, you can check the web for the closest and best public indoor lap swimming pools. They have a few listed with a map showing you how close they are to your hotel.
Going to San Fran in September is it really necessary to have a rental car . If all tourist sites are like this buses seem to be available ? Any help with this would be great Thank you in advance.

We didn't find it necessary to have a rental car in the city. Taxis are very inexpensive and lots of public transport options. With cable cars it can be a bit tricky driving if you're not used to it. We hired a car for trips out of the city (Napa, Sonoma). City relatively small so attractions not difficult to get to.
We are going to see a Giants game and will be coming from SFO. Are there places to park in this Embarcadero area to leave the car (without spending an arm and possibly a leg) and walk to the stadium?
