New Year's Eve celebrations have been cancelled in a North Yorkshire city amid weather warnings for flooding and high winds for the county. Ripon City Council said a firework display and live entertainment to welcome in 2025 in the Market Square would no longer take place.

Strong winds are expected to bring gusts up to 50mph (80km/h) across many areas, with winds potentially reaching 65mph (104km/h) in a few exposed areas. The windy conditions could also cause some transport disruption,

Heavy rain and high winds are causing disruption in much of the country, with blizzards forecast in Scotland and widespread cancellation of New Year's Eve events. Almost every part of the UK is covered by at least one of multiple Met Office weather warnings between Monday and Wednesday.

Covering Monday 30 December to Thursday 2 January, the warnings see all parts of the UK affected at some point in the week. The wet and windy weather will begin in Scotland and northern regions before moving downwards overnight on New Year’s Eve and into New Year’s Day.
