The Phillies delayed the inevitable long enough. They had moved into first place in the National League East on May 3, held a 10-game lead as late as July 5 and never let anybody get any closer than five games the rest of the way.

When the Philadelphia Phillies won the NL East for the fifth year in a row in 2011, they probably did not expect to have to wait too much longer for their next division title.
