Is one of the NHL's best rivalries nearing an end? Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin will meet for the 100th and 101st time during their Hall of Fame careers when the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals play twice on the final weekend of the season.
Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby could meet for the last time as the Washington Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins, and no one wants to miss the action.
Ovechkin will make his NHL retirement decision during the offseason, the Washington captain said in an interview posted by the team on social media. The 40-year-old forward’s contract is set to expire after the 2025-26 NHL season, so retirement always made sense when it concluded.
Washington Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin is 40 years old and in his 21st season in the NHL, but he isn’t sure he’s ready to call it quits. Not yet. I’m going to make a decision this summer,” Ovechkin told “Caps Pregame Live” in a clip shared by the Capitals in a post to X.
Alex Ovechkin got a hat trick against the Mammoth and his accomplishment shares a wild connection with Michael Jordan.
The Washington Capitals could be looking for a new captain if Ovechkin retires, with a natural replacement already on the roster.
There was Tom Wilson, springing Ryan Leonard for an out-of-the-penalty-box breakaway goal. There was Cole Hutson, dancing through the offensive zone and ringing a puck off the post. There was Logan Thompson, stopping all 21 shots he faced.
Ovechkin, who leads the Capitals with 29 goals, said he will keep some of the jerseys at his home, but plans to display most of them, along with his extensive collection of sticks, in his museum, which is being built in his hometown of Moscow, Russia. He hopes construction will be completed so the museum can open sometime next year.
“Game’s changed almost every year, you know. More faces come into the league and you can see how fast they are how skilled they are," Ovechkin said. "Obviously you have to adjust yourself, your body, your mind and it’s life.”
