Haiti's international airport shut down on Monday after gangs opened fire at a commercial flight landing in Port-au-Prince, prompting some airlines to temporarily suspend operations as the country swore in a new interim prime minister who promised to restore peace.

A Spirit Airlines flight travelling from Florida to Haiti has been diverted after it was hit by gunfire. A flight attendant was grazed by a bullet after the belly of the plane was punctured as it was landing at Port-au-Prince.

Spirit confirmed in a statement that one of its flights from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was diverted to the Dominican Republic on Monday. It said an inspection of the aircraft showed damage consistent with gunfire.
