The Tar Heels lost starting quarterback Jacolby Criswell to a leg injury on the second series of the contest, giving way to freshman Michael Merdinger, who hadn't yet played in a game this season. UNC's offense stalled as a result and the Huskies built a 17-point lead by halftime of a contest that was only competitive late in the fourth quarter.
