With previous aerial maps taken at least once a year totaling over 140,000 square kilometers online, some of them dating back to 2014, users are able to compare current imagery with historical photos.

A lot of work and technology went into the production of the aerial maps. And it’s good to keep in mind that the maps weren’t produced for the average viewer, but rather for use by city planners.

The new version of the map includes data from Landsat 8, the newer version of the same satellite, letting Google clear the ugly artifacts. Landsat 8 has been operational since the spring of 2013.
