A federal judge on Wednesday sided with Facebook parent Meta Platforms in dismissing a copyright infringement lawsuit from a group of authors who accused the company of stealing their works to train its artificial intelligence technology.

A federal judge in California has issued a complicated ruling in one of the first major copyright cases involving AI training, finding that while using books to train AI models constitutes fair use, downloading pirated books was a violation of copyright.

A US judge has ruled that Anthropic's AI training on copyrighted books is fair use, but storing pirated books was not. Trial is set for December to determine damages.
