The NFL reportedly plans on considering changes to its playoff format during the upcoming offseason. According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, the

The NFL playoffs are single elimination. The four division champions from each conference make the playoffs and are seeded No. 1 through No. 4 based on record. The three remaining teams in each conference with the best record qualify for the postseason as wild-card teams and are seeded No. 5 through No. 7.

The NFL was able to expand from 12 to 14 by shrinking the number of first-round byes from four to two. Only the highest seed in each conference earns a bye, meaning the other six playoff teams from each conference have to play in the wild-card round.

Before the shift to a 14 team playoff in 2020, the NFL had kept the playoffs very consistent for quite some time. In fact, it was the first time since 1990 that the playoff format had been altered, having gone from a 10 to 12 team format at the outset of the ’90s.
