Hana Ali, author of More Than a Hero and co-author with her father of The Soul of a Butterfly, wrote this story for ESPN in 2011. This is the first time it has appeared in print.

Hana, who has written two previous books about her father, was one of Ali's two daughters with Veronica, his third of four wives. He had nine children in total, including those born out of wedlock.
