A potential trade war between the United States and its two neighbors has been thwarted for now, though the U.S.-China status remains murky after both parties implemented tariffs on Tuesday, their leaders yet to speak with one another as of late afternoon.

President Trump agreed to delay tariffs on Mexico and Canada for a month after both countries pledged to do more to block drugs and migrants.

The last-minute deal had echoes of Trump's first administration, when he threatened Mexico with tariffs and Sheinbaum's predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador defused the threat, sending thousands of troops under his newly created National Guard to deter migrants from crossing the border.
