An estimated 200,000 people in state, foster and faith-based care suffered "unimaginable" abuse over a period of seven decades, a report released in July said.

New Zealand on Tuesday offered a rare national apology to victims and families of hundreds of thousands of young people and vulnerable adults who were subjected to institutional physical and sexual abuse over the last 70 years.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said sorry to some 200,000 survivors of physical and sexual abuse in institutions, which an inquiry called a “national disgrace.”
