People who commercially fish blame a years-earlier drought that walloped waterways, as well as state and federal water management policies they say have made it tough for the species to thrive.

While it’s an unprecedented third year in a row for no commercially caught salmon, brief windows will be allowed for sportsfishing in California.

The council overseeing U.S. Pacific coast fisheries issued a new recommendation Tuesday for “very limited” recreational salmon fishing through the end of 2025, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
