Jan. 22—ROCHESTER — Hy-Vee says customers wanted their Market Grilles back with its hash browns and burgers, so the Iowa-based grocer is pulling the plug on its in-store Wahlburgers restaurants.

Hy-Vee says that the transition to Market Grille stores will be completed by February 4. After that date, Wahlburgers will still have around 40 locations across America.

Wahlburgers, founded in 2011, started coming en mass to Iowa as Hy-Vee converted Market Grille restaurants to the brand. The first Wahlburgers at Hy-Vee opened in 2018, and many more followed in 2020.

Hy-Vee will replace all of its in-store Wahlburgers restaurants, including one in Sioux City, with the supermarket chain's own Market Grille brand.

The restaurant, formerly a Hy-Vee Market Grille Express, was converted and transitioned to become a casual, counter-service Wahlburgers at Hy-Vee, open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
