Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle developed the popular word game, releasing it to the public in October 2021. In January 2022, The New York Times acquired Wordle at a cost "in the low seven figures," the newspaper reported at the time. Despite creating the game, however, Wardle previously told Newsweek he's not the best player.
