Despite a few decidedly quiet periods so far, forecasters say the conditions are still favorable for more hurricanes this year. The latest storm, Gabrielle, formed on Wednesday.
Tropical Depression 7 is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm later today or tonight and into a hurricane over the weekend.
The Atlantic basin may have been quiet going into the peak of hurricane season, but a new storm is expected to develop in the region in the coming days.
