U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday said the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace this week was unacceptable but that it remained unclear if Russia had deliberately sent the drones into Polish territory.
The United States has stated at a UN Security Council meeting that Moscow had violated international law and the UN Charter when Russian drones entered Polish airspace. Responding to President Trump, Poland's leader said, "we would also wish that the drone attack on Poland was a mistake. But it wasn't."
Poland rejected on Friday a suggestion by Donald Trump that Russian drone incursions into its airspace could have been a mistake, a rare contradiction of the U.S. president from one of Washington's closest European allies.
The response from the U.S. came hours after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the country’s airspace was “violated by a huge number of Russian drones” on Tuesday night and any drones that “posed a direct threat” were shot down. The incident marked the first time a NATO member has opened fire during the Ukraine war.
When asked by reporters what his reaction was to the incursion, Trump responded: "It could have been a mistake. But regardless, I'm not happy with anything to do with that whole situation."
Military officials in Poland say the country's airspace was "repeatedly violated by drone-type objects" in the overnight hours amid Russian strikes on targets in Ukraine.
The incursion was the first time alliance planes had engaged enemy targets in NATO airspace. Poland’s leader called it “a large-scale provocation.”
WOHYN, Poland (AP) — Multiple Russian drones crossed into Poland in what European officials described Wednesday as a deliberate provocation, causing NATO to send fighter jets to shoot them down. A NATO spokesman said it was the first time the alliance confronted a potential threat in its airspace.
