Baldi was greeted with hugs and tears from relatives, friends and former patients. One of the well-wishers was Burgan, who had used a cane to limp her way into the courtroom on most days of the trial.

Baldi, who worked as a pain-medicine specialist, denied any wrongdoing in the overdose deaths of several patients. He was acquitted of nine involuntary-manslaughter charges in 2014.
