Use manual focus if you're comfortable with it. If you have trouble focusing, start on auto-focus and once the fireworks are in focus, switch to manual so you don't accidentally lose focus. Wider-angle lenses are usually better. Typically, the best shots will be closer to the start of the show because smoke will start getting in the way.
