Back East, the fashion of silk hats for men spelled the end for fur-trapping mountain men. When felt made from beaver skins was no longer popular, beaver trapping as a way of life ended.

Oregon historian and journalist John Terry will talk about the tales of Oregon mountain man Joesph Meek at the Washington County Museum on Oct. 16.

He fought in the 1832 battle of Pierre’s Hole between the mountain men and a band of Gros Ventres and worked a while with explorer and soldier of fortune Benjamin L.E. Bonneville.
