Many marshals badges were stars set in a shield. Arizona Rangers wore five-pointed stars, while Texas Rangers and California Rangers wore badges with a star set in a circle.

In a tweet on Monday, Trump said he had not meant the six-pointed star to refer to the Star of David, which is a symbol of Judaism. Rather, he said, the star could have referred to a sheriff's badge.

The defense: Trump argues that it was a sheriff’s badge, or perhaps a “basic” six-pointed star. But a sheriff’s badge wouldn’t make any sense in this context.

Next to the homeless man officers saw a "5-star silver badge resembling that of a sheriff's deputy" on top of a wallet in plain view.
