St. John the Evangelist started as a mission in 1915. It became a parish in 1948. The original 1915 church was financed with an $800 grant from Detroit Bishop James Foley, Ortman said.

Built in 1855, the chapel at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hydes is still used today for weekday Mass, weddings and other functions thanks to several restoration projects in recent years.
