An international team of scientists spent three months at sea drilling into a huge, mysterious reservoir of freshwater under the salty ocean. They hope it could help tackle an increasingly severe global water crisis.

Another seaside home along the Outer Banks in North Carolina collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean this week, the 12th collapse on the seashore beaches over the past five years. The unoccupied house collapsed Tuesday evening during the high waves from a coastal storm.

The tropical hazard outlook for September, issued by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center this week, indicates that forecasters expect the warmer waters to increase the chances of tropical activity in the Gulf next week. The second half of hurricane season typically sees more activity in the Caribbean and Gulf than the first half.

The AMOC is driven, by differences in water temperatures and salinity, but climate change could disrupt that balance.
