The Big Apple’s new congestion pricing mandate has turned one city block into a pricey proposition. A single one-block stretch of First Avenue between 60th and 61st streets will now cost drivers $9 as they come off the Queensboro Bridge — even though they’re driving north and away from the zone.

Congestion pricing is making a comeback in New York City after Gov. Kathy Hochul announced plans to restart the controversial program. The plan will start as scheduled on Sunday after a judge ruled in favor of New York in a case brought by New Jersey in an effort to delay the plan.

Beginning Sunday, most motorists will have to pay $9 for driving below 60th Street in Manhattan, as New York’s first-in-the-nation congestion pricing plan takes effect in an area traversed by 700,000 vehicles daily.

Congestion tolling is scheduled to start on January 5 in NYC, barring any last minute legal challenges. The path to this point has been long and confusing — so drivers have many questions about the MTA’s plan to reduce congestion and raise funds for mass transit improvements.

The toll applies to the most congested part of Manhattan, south of Central Park, below 60th Street and cost drivers $9 a day.
