Donald Trump would have been convicted of illegally trying to overturn the result of the 2020 U.S. election had he not become President again, according to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s partially released report.

Prosecutors believed they had enough evidence to convict Donald Trump for efforts to overturn the 2020 result before they had to drop the case, Jack Smith said.

The report, which said the special counsel’s office stood “fully behind” the merits of the prosecution, amounted to an extraordinary rebuke of the president-elect.

Trump responded early Tuesday with a post on his Truth Social platform, claiming he was “totally innocent” and calling Smith “a lamebrain prosecutor who was unable to get his case tried before the Election.” He added, “THE VOTERS HAVE SPOKEN!!!”
