Yet amid this transformation, glimpses of the old French Colonial world remain: the house at 632 Dumaine St., known today as Madam John’s Legacy, among them.

But Colonial Williamsburg isn’t all muskets and tri-corner hats. Right next to the historic area is Merchants Square, which blends 18th-century architecture with modern shops and restaurants.
