As Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of the Swedish multinational furniture retailer Ikea, recently passed away, it is interesting to reflect on how he and Ikea may have contributed to exporting this image.

Mr Kamprad founded IKEA aged 17. Well before that, he spotted a principle which would make him one of the richest men in the world: that customers like buying retail goods at wholesale prices.

Ingvar Kamprad began preparing for his death after his 50th birthday in 1976, to ensure that the company had enough money to grow on its own—he was fiercely opposed to going public.
