Despite the murky water, many spearers remain eager for the season, using whatever they can to lure in a catch. Sturgeon are naturally curious fish, often drawn to objects in the water, which is why spearers use a variety of decoys to bring them in closer.

The sturgeon spearing season opens on the Lake Winnebago system Feb. 8 as fishing clubs monitor ice, but the water clarity is less than stellar.
