OJ Simpson, the Heisman Trophy-winning and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back who was acquitted of double murder, died Thursday after a battle with cancer, his family announced. He was 76.

Simpson led the nation in rushing yards each season he was with USC, rushing for 1,543 yards and 1,880 yards on 383 carries in 1968. He helped USC win the National Championship in 1967.

While the Heisman and Pro Football Hall of Fame issued statements after news of O.J. Simpson's death, USC, the Buffalo Bills and NFL remain silent.
