Rhaenyra's attempts to find new riders for the unclaimed dragons beneath Dragonstone seemed to end in failure when Ser Steffon Darklyn was killed by Laenor's dragon, Seasmoke.

They do so based on dialog from Rhaenyra herself in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Episode 6, where she says that the bond between Laenor and her dragon Seasmoke has been broken.

If House of the Dragon was following the lore of George R.R. Martin's books to the letter, I'd say that Addam riding Seasmoke is proof of Laenor's faraway death.
