"It's tragic that increased political violence could be seen as a threat to our democracy and our way of life," KOAT political expert Brian Sanderoff said.

Months before his own assassination, slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk warned his followers on social media that "assassination culture is spreading on the left."

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said that a family member of the suspect's reached out to a family friend who contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting occurred during an event titled “Prove Me Wrong” at which Kirk addressed and also exchanged views with those in attendance.

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was shot on Wednesday at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, Fox News reported, citing a spokesperson for the influential ally of U.S. President Donald Trump.
