The Toronto Blue Jays are sitting in first place in the American League East division and are slowly inching towards being the top seed in the American League.

Alejandro Kirk hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays rallied to beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-4.

Toronto already tipped its hand to some degree when it moved lefty Eric Lauer, who has an 8-2 record and 3.32 ERA entering play on Thursday, to the bullpen after the arrival of trade deadline acquisition Shane Bieber. That may not be the end of Lauer's misfortune, as one baseball writer predicted on Wednesday.

B ack at the trade deadline, the Toronto Blue Jays made a huge move when they acquired former AL Cy Young award winner Shane Bieber. Normally, that would have automatically been seen as a great move, but because he was still recovering from Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for almost all last year, there were questions about his viability.

The Blue Jays are closing in on October, and now they’re turning to a fresh arm to help finish the job. Toronto intends to promote Trey Yesavage, their 2024 first-round pick, by Monday, according to Shi Davidi and Ben Nocholson-Smith.

As the Blue Jays try and take home the AL East crown, it's clear one of their pitchers needs to take a massive step forward.
