The Foundation provides charitable support to eligible tax-exempt organizations for certain charitable efforts that are consistent with Lilly 30x30, Eli Lilly and Company’s goal to improve health care for 30 million people, each year, by 2030.

Lilly Endowment Inc. was founded in 1937 by J.K. Lilly, Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. for the “promotion and support of religious, educational or charitable purposes.” Throughout its history, the Endowment has sought to nurture the human spirit, intellect and character.

J. K. Lilly Sr. initially served on the foundation board and became its largest contributor. Over time, he donated Eli Lilly and Company stock worth a total of $86.8 million to the foundation, including a $30 million bequest following his death in 1948.

Launched in 2020, Lilly and the Lilly Foundation's Racial Justice Commitment aimed to enhance equity and help decrease the burden of racial injustice and its effects on communities of color. As part of this effort, Lilly pledged 25,000 volunteer hours and the Lilly Foundation committed $25 million over five years.
