Its many technical innovations and sophisticated vehicle concept made the BMW M3 the perfect platform for motorsport. The car made its racing debut in the US in 2009 as the BMW M3 GT2, also known as the BMW M3 ALMS (American Le Mans Series).

In 1996, BMW M hand-built an E36 M3 Compact prototype as an M-car which would appeal to younger customers. It included various performance and styling features of the E36 M3, including the 3.2-litre S50 engine.

Mar 14, 2011 · The BMW M3 GT2 racecars are built using pressed steel bodyshells taken from the M3 production line at Regensburg, which has been used for production of sporting versions of the manufacturer’s road car models since the first iteration of the M3 in 1986.

Based on the road-going M3, the GT2 racer was completely stripped and fitted with a wider and more aggressive body crafted from carbon-fibre composites. The nose featured a deep splitter and a tall wing was mounted on the rear deck.

The second chassis produced for the 2009 season, this car was used for test and development purposes while the sister cars were raced in the United States with the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing team. The car helped the BMW Team Schnitzer prepare for the Nürburgring 24 Hours and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It came as little surprise to BMW and the Prototype Technology Group (PTG) team that the GTS-2 M3s would go on to solidify the second-generation M3’s position in racing history. The 1995 Sports Car season proved to have its challenges for the new PTG M3s.
