Jul 23, 2021 · I enjoyed Eternal; not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. I preferred 2016 for the hands off story approach. Doom Eternal leaned too far into cutscenes / beating the player over the head. I also prefer the gameplay loop in 2016. Managing flame belch, chainsaw, glory kills was annoying in big battles.

It's an almost unmatched masterclass of FPS design that asks all the right things from the player and offer a lot in return. 2016 is less focused and not as accomplished in terms of mechanics, but it's a extraordinarily fun game that might appeal more for people who thinks Eternal is too demanding.

Feb 14, 2024 · Doom Eternal is incredible and handles perfectly fine with a gamepad if that's how you're used to playing these kinds of games. Recognizing the concessions made when opting for a gamepad over a kb+m solution, I did not feel that I was particularly handicapped in this situation.

Dec 1, 2021 · Eternal has ruined DOOM 2016 for me retroactively and it feels like a bare bones prototype compared to Eternal. I guess that's a good thing as it means the franchise is in a upward trajectory and they addressed everything from the first game and then some, but I can't really recall when a sequel has made the previous game this obsolete for me.

5 days ago · I loved Doom 2016. I very strongly disliked Doom Eternal and never bothered to beat it (despite several attempts to start it). This game has me right back and ready for Day 1. My biggest annoyance with Eternal was that it felt like constant busywork and micromanagement and that I was constantly on a checklist rotation of what to do next in combat.

Mar 29, 2021 · Huh. Bethesda's games almost always seem to have awful sound mixing, but I didn't actually have any problem with Doom Eternal. Played loud through a surround sound system, the weapons were suitably punchy without drowning out the music too much (though I don't recall if I had to tweak the levels).

Aug 24, 2021 · Boss fights in DOOM have ALWAYS been kind of mediocre at best, but the Icon of Sin in Eternal is incredibly easy if you just bounce around on the blue gravity lift things and slow mo chain gun him. Take a break occasionally to thin out the mobs with the infinite crucible ammo the game gives you during the fight.
