By tradition the tiger is a live Bengal tiger, although the current mascot and his two immediate predecessors are mixed-breeds.

Oct 9, 2024 · Mike III was born Nov. 26, 1957, at the Seattle Zoo and was introduced at the LSU vs. Hardin-Simmons game on Oct. 4, 1958, in time for LSU's 1958 national champion football year. After that, Mike III became a bigger celebrity than his predecessors as he made appearances at LSU's postseason bowl games.

Mike III served as LSU's mascot for eighteen years. During his lifetime LSU won the national championship in football (with a 7-0 win over Clemson) and three SEC championships (in 1958, 1961, 1970); the football team played thirteen bowl games, winning eight of them and complied a 142-50-7 record overall.
