Along this street, you’ll find not only businesses and retail shops, but also the majestic Hammond-Harwood House (open to the public) and the Chase-Lloyd House, built by a Maryland signer of the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Chase.

Located on the blocks between our State House and The US Naval Academy, Maryland Avenue is a meeting spot for Governors, members of Congress, Faculty and students from both the US Naval Academy as well as Saint John’s College.

- Significance: Maryland Avenue was developed along the lines of L'Enfant's 1791 plan of the city, as a roadway with vistas to the Capitol. Because much of its historic character has been retained northeast of the Capitol, the segment between First and Eleventh Streets, NE, has been included in the Capitol Hill Historic District.
