Star dunes are pyramidal sand mounds with arms that spread from a central peak. They form in areas with multidirectional wind regimes that change the way sand is piled onto the dune. They look like stars when viewed from above. They grow upward rather than laterally. They are found in some of Earth’s largest modern deserts, as well as on other planets and moons.
