East Oakland is a geographical region of Oakland, California, United States, that stretches between Lake Merritt in the northwest and San Leandro in the southeast. As the southeastern portion of the city, East Oakland takes up the largest portion of the city's land area.

That said, if you ignore the freeways, and grab a compass and start wandering around Oakland, you will be going more East-West than you will go North-South if you walk from Downtown to, say, the Oakland Zoo. Related bit of Bay Area east/west trivia: Berkeley is further West than Palo Alto.

Downtown and West Oakland are located entirely in the flatlands, while North and East Oakland incorporate lower hills and flatlands neighborhoods. West oakland is the neighborhood encircled by 880 and 980. East Oakland is anything past lake Merritt below 580. Deep East is anything below 580 past about high street. This is broadly speaking. These areas have several neighborhoods within.

I live in Oakland and love Oakland, but West Oakland and the deep East are the higher crime rate parts of Oakland. Oakland and areas near Mandela also have higher homelessness than the rest of Oakland which is already quite high.

Nov 28, 2020 · "East" Oakland (South Oakland) and West Richmond seem to be two of the most shunned areas in the East Bay. Which is worse in terms of livability? I would say West Richmond, as East Oakland is closer to the pathway of Gentrification.
