Having survived the atomic blasts, Prinz Eugen was towed to Kwajalein Atoll, where she ultimately capsized and sank in December 1946. The wreck remains partially visible above the water approximately two miles northwest of Bucholz Army Airfield, on the edge of Enubuj.

Apr 30, 2021 · Prinz Eugen saw out the war supporting German forces on the Eastern Front as they were pushed back by the Russians. In March, she fired almost 5,000 shells from her 10 and 20 cm/4.1 and 8 inch guns, bombarding Russian-held positions.

Shortly after arriving, Prinz Eugen received severe damage after being hit by a torpedo fired by Trident, a British submarine. She again returned to Germany for urgent repairs to her stern.

On May 8, 1945 when Germany surrendered, Prinz Eugen and Nürnberg the only major German warships to survive in serviceable condition and are surrendered to the Royal Navy at Copenhagen. On May 27, 1945 Prinz Eugen and Nürnberg were escorted by HMS Dido (37) and HMS Devonshire (39) to Wilhelmshaven.

Dec 27, 2018 · In an operation that took approximately two years, they removed almost 230,000 gallons of oil that had remained on the ship in 173 tanks. Originally part of the German Navy, the Prinz Eugen was given to the U.S. after World War II as a victory prize. The Americans used the ship to learn about the survivability of warships during atomic attacks.

Prinz Eugen survived the war, was used in the atomic bombing operation crossroads in July 1946. Even the atomic bomb she survived. Prinz Eugen eventually capsized and sank at Kwajalein Atoll on 22 December 1946.
