Dec 29, 2016 · Yes, the history of Westeros is heavily inspired by British history. Among the major inspirations, the 7 kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England, Aegon is William the Conqueror, the Dance of the Dragons is The Anarchy, and RR and the WOT5K are based on the Wars of the Roses.

Regarding the Goodbrooks, I only included the houses that were mentioned as "principal bannermen" in the appendices and the houses who's castles we know the location of. Otherwise there would be far too many houses.

The North takes up about a third of Westeros (not counting the LOAW) yet has maybe 1/7 of the population. Scotland makes about a third of the island of Britain yet only held 1/7 of the population too for most of its history.

Obviously Westeros was fleshed out by other details in order to make it more realistic, and Martin used aspects of many cultures and places to create Westeros, but it all started with Antillia.

We also know that Dorne and the North, which make up two pretty big chunks of territory (the North is the largest singular kingdom, by a fair margin) have fairly low population densities.
