Nov 11, 2024 · AJ&K (Azad Jammu and Kashmir), nestled in the picturesque Himalayas, is a region of breathtaking beauty and rich cultural heritage. Governed by its own president and prime minister, it enjoys semi-autonomous status within Pakistan.

Azad Kashmir (Free Kashmir) was the title of a pamphlet issued by the Muslim Conference party at its 13th general session held in 1945 at Poonch. [12] It is believed to have been a response to the National Conference's Naya Kashmir (New Kashmir) programme. [13]

Pakistan and India came into existence as independent states in August, 1947. The principle of partition was specified in the plan: The all Muslim majority areas were to constitute part of Pakistan and similarly the Hindu majority areas were to go to India.

The people of Kashmir, nearly 80 per cent of who were Muslims, rose against Maharaja Hari Singh’s rule. He ruthlessly crushed a mass uprising in 1931. In 1932, Sheikh Abdullah formed Kashmir’s first political party—the All Jammu & Kashmir Muslim Conference (renamed as National Conference in 1939).

The Muslims of Kashmir started a liberation war against India in 1947. As a result of this war in 1947, the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir was established on 24 th October, 1947, in the liberated area which is about 5,000 square miles out of total area of 84,471 square miles.
