Feb 25, 2009 · I have no idea why the previous owner decided on Mercon V for a 22 year old Toyota with such a robust and bulletproof transmission. My only concern is that I can't access the differential fluid, and that would presumably still be the Mercon V.

Jan 20, 2023 · I think it's just the Mercon V spec'd transmissions that get bad torque converter shudder when a multi fluid is used. With my 4R70w and previous AX4S, I'd always make sure to run a specific Mercon-V fluid.

May 17, 2007 · Mercon was pretty similar to Dexron, but Ford changed the formula. Mercon-Dexron is no longer a valid spec, being superseded. Use the Mercon V, or Mobil 1 ATF. Both are good fluids. Oct 23, 2006 · Yup, two totally different specs. Mazda Corp. told me straight up not to use Mercon-V in my FNR5 transmission. But then again, they say not to use anything but the Motorcraft FNR5 fluid. I think Amsoil has a fluid that they recommend for Mazda M-V spec'd trannies (mazda6i, ford fusion i4, mercury milan i4).

May 15, 2012 · I do know the 10 speed units in GM HD's don't play well with a ~6Cst (LV) fluid, they need the ~4 Cst ULV. Shift timing and slip get messed up by 'saving' the trans with a 'thick' fluid.
