The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Love and Light Drive is dedicated to honoring the enduring legacy of the SCLC through the lens of two pivotal dates in American history: the founding of the SCLC and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Chairman of the board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Bernard LaFayette, Jr. has been a Civil Rights Movement activist, minister, educator, lecturer, and is an authority on the strategy on nonviolent social change.

In 2011 the board of SCLC unanimously voted Dr. Steele as President Emeritus. On July 2, 2012 he was elected Chief Executive Officer for the second time. In August 2013, Dr. Steele made history by becoming the first SCLC President and CEO to ever hold this position twice.

1961: SCLC supports the Freedom Rides, challenging segregation in interstate travel. 1962 : The SCLC conducts voter registration drives in the South. 1963 : The Birmingham Campaign begins, involving nonviolent protests against segregation.
