This Spring, I will be returning to one of my favorite and most performed roles: Mario Cavaradossi in “Tosca.” Set in Rome in 1800, Puccini’s incredible opera was premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in 1900. Despite its Roman heritage, the opera was based on a French play by Victorien Sardou entitled “La Tosca.” Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa were charged with writing the Italian libretto, after Ricordi - Puccini’s publisher - obtained the rights in Paris.
