Forsythia is one of the earliest spring bloomers. The flowers that come out in the spring were set on the stems last spring. So if anyone pruned your for Forsythia in fall or before it bloomed this winter/spring, you probably don’t have any flowers this year. You should prune your Forsythia within two weeks of the yellow flowers falling off in spring. Forsythia also blooms best on thin Young stems so it’s a good idea to rejuvenate your shrub by cutting out 30% of the thickest stems all the way d

Forsythia benefit from rejuvenation pruning. The younger thinner stems produce the most flowers and resist disease and pests, so cut the thickest oldest stems down to the base. If your shrub is overgrown, you can completely cut the entire plant down to the ground and the root system will regrow. It probably won’t bloom for several years, but it will be healthy and beautiful.
