The first women to fly U.S. military aircraft were a part of the WASPs, or Women Air Force Service Pilots. The famous pilot and air racer, Jacqueline Cochran, was one of them. She believed the WASP’s could shoulder logistical stateside burdens while male pilots flew in combat overseas.
